H.R. 3012 Scheduled for Markup This Week

October 10, 2011

H.R. 3012, “Fairness for High-Skilled Immigrants Act,” introduced by Rep. Jason Chaffetz on September 23, 2011 and referred to the House Subcommittee on Immigration Policy and Enforcement is scheduled for Markup by the full Judiciary Committee on Friday, October 14th. The bill sponsored by Rep. Chaffetz has one co-sponsor, Rep. Lamar Smith, the Chair of the Judiciary Committee.

As Stuart Anderson, the Executive Director of the National Foundation for American Policy, summarizes, the Act

would phase out the per country limit for employment-based immigrants over a four-year period. By the fourth year the per country limit would be eliminated entirely for employment-based immigrants. The bill would also raise the per country limit on family-based immigrants from 7 percent to 15 percent, which would help those waiting the longest for green cards in family categories, particularly from Mexico and the Philippines.
